FAQ: Questions and Answers

Q: Why is a deposit and proof of residence required to open an account?

A: The deposit is a temporary charge that the FGUA holds in escrow and returns to you (with interest) after two years of timely payments. This deposit is also used to pay the last bill if you close your account within 24 months. When this happens, we return the remainder of the deposit to you. Proof of residence is required for your protection--this way no one else can open an account on your property, leaving you to pay a bill you do not owe, or close your account leaving you with no water or sewer services.

Q: Why does it seem like my water utility bill is going up?

A: Especially as the days get hotter, this is an important question from some FGUA customers. Because FGUA utility rates are adjusted annually on Oct. 1, a change in the fee structure isn’t the likely cause. If you call the FGUA Customer Service line about your bill, the representative will first check your usage history. Sometimes having house guests, installing new landscaping or leaks can cause small increases in your month-to-month water utility payment. If none of these apply to you, please call our Customer Service line and request a meter re-read or information on finding leaks.

Q: What is the E-Z Pay system?

A: The FGUA makes it easier for you to pay your monthly water and/or wastewater bill. With E-Z Pay, your payments will be directly debited from your checking or savings account. You will have approximately 15 days after your bill is issued to place the money in your account before it is debited. Upon enrollment into the E-Z Pay system, the FGUA will print a statement on your monthly bill signaling the program to begin. Best of all, if you have any questions, help is just a phone call away with our FGUA Customer Service Centers. To sign up, contact your respective Customer Service Center.

Q: How do I avoid being charged a late fee?

1. Sign up for our E-Z Pay Program. This program deducts your monthly billed amount from your bank account automatically on the 15th day after the bill is issued.
2. Write your account number on your check or money order to ensure that your payment is posted to the correct account.
3. Payments made late should not be placed in our drop box after business hours on the due date. Payments should not be mailed to our customer service centers on the due date. Until payment is received in our centers for posting, it does not constitute a timely payment. All payments received in our Customer Service center are posted daily.
4. DO NOT place any “cash” in our drop box at any time.

Q: What is a special assessment?

A: Special assessments have been around in one form or another since the early 1900s. Special assessments are charges placed on property because the property benefits from certain public improvements. Those public improvements may include, but are not limited to, streets, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and traffic signals. Properties may be in more than one special assessment benefit district if they benefit from more than one public improvement. The FGUA may use special assessments to fund water or sewer line extensions to fast-growing regions of our service area, instead of raising overall service rates for the entire customer base.
