The FGUA Lehigh Acres System is located inside Lee County, and situated 12 miles east of Fort Myers near I-75 and Southwest Florida International Airport. The System was developed to serve the Lehigh Acres community but it is growing rapidly—with over 60 miles of new water main constructed in 2004 alone. The System covers about 60,000 acres of residential and light commercial property with over 10,901 water customers and 8,818 wastewater customers. Single-family residential homes, condominiums, apartments, patio homes, golf course villas, and estates make up most of the residential areas. The light commercial developments mostly serve these residents.
The Lehigh Acres System includes one water treatment plant, 13 water wells, and one wastewater treatment plant. In addition to the existing Lehigh facilities, the FGUA’s Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan outlines over $30 million in upgrades in the coming years.
An infiltration and inflow removal project is currently under construction. This project is intended to reduce (I&I) inflow into the collection system during the rainy season. Construction includes testing and sealing joints and laterals, Manhole to Manhole lining, smoke testing, cleaning and video inspecting sewer lines.
A wastewater lift station rehabilitation project is currently under construction in Lehigh Acres and is estimated to be completed April 2010. This project will increase the size of Master Lift Station No. 44 and help prevent possible overflows.
Construction of a reuse expansion project began December 2009 and will increase the availability of reclaimed water in Lehigh Acres.
A well rehabilitation project is currently underway in Lehigh Acres which is for the yearly rehabilitation of the existing groundwater wells in the Lehigh Acres Utility System. The rehabilitation consists of video inspection, flushing, pump inspection, etc.
A manhole rehabilitation project is currently underway and includes sealing and coating of deteriorated manholes and adjustments that are necessary to restore the manholes to their original condition.
A filter rehabilitation project is currently underway at the Lehigh Acres WTP No. 1. The rehabilitation includes removing and disposing of all existing media, acid cleaning all stainless steel filter discs, sand blasting the interior to bare metal and recoating with an NSF epoxy and installation of new media.
A wastewater lift station telemetry project is currently underway in Lehigh Acres. The project includes installation of radio telemetry units that will be integrated into the current SCADA.
The Lehigh Acres FGUA Utility Advisory Committee is made of five local community members with experience or interest in the FGUA. The FGUA Board of Directors appoints committee members to offer suggestions and recommendations on FGUA business to the FGUA board. The members serve a voluntary three-year term.
